ESTHER

August 1941

“Miss Sable, phone call from Lunna House, Shetland Isles!”

Sable looked up from the fur coat of a dead rabbit she was holding in her hands, her first catch with a trap she’d made herself. Killer, beside her, was grinning from ear to ear.

Helen, the newly appointed Alnor maid, stood squarely on the lawn, scanning the surroundings with a hand above her eyes against the bright sunlight.

“Miss Sable, telephone!” she called again.

Sable dropped the rabbit in Killer’s lap and, brushing the thin gray-brown hairs from her hands, jogged back to the house.

It must be Bill! she thought, rather panicked. Bill’s phoning me. Is that good or bad?

He’d been gone for three weeks now and though she managed with the instructors and an increasing number of students, not a moment to herself from dawn to dusk, she missed him like the sky misses the stars.

“Coming! Is it Captain Bill, Helen?”

“Aye, tis! Quickly, Miss, the Captain says these calls are expensive.”

Sable took up the receiver, her heart in her throat. “Yes? Are you there, Bill?”

“Hello, Sable dear. Yes. Just a quick call. I miss ye so much.”

“I miss you too, Bill. Everything all right? You gave me a fright, thought something had happened.”

“Yes, everythin’s a’rite. Just thought that we’re doin’ a type of commando trainin’ here that I’d like to show ye. Maybe we could introduce it at Alnor. Are you interested? There’s a Norwegian girl comin’ here today, so ye wouldn’t be the only female. I know it’s a lousy excuse to see ye.”

“I’d love to, Bill, but I can’t simply walk away from here. There’re more agents arriving every day. We now have Poles and Czechs as well, and you know how small the staff is. We’re expecting a new shooting instructor by the end of the week.” Sable was terribly tempted to just shout ‘yes!’ but then Egbert called her from the schoolroom.

“Sable, got any more chalk for the chalkboard?”

“Just a sec, Bill!” And with her hand over the receiver, she called back, “In the sideboard drawer!” The lack of training staff meant Egbert was teaching temporarily as well.

Then Helen pulled on her sleeve. “I need two men to help dig up more potatoes for lunch.”

Sable’s head buzzed, as it continuously did these days. How on earth could she leave now?

“I can’t, Bill. I want to, but you hear how it is here. Crazy busy.”

“It would only be for one week, Sable. Ye could hand over the management to Lock and Killer.”

She was so tempted. Longed for his embrace so much. Only a quick break with the one man who filled her dreams at night? Rubbing her tired forehead, she protested less strongly.

“How would I get to the Shetlands?”

“By plane, of course. I can collect ye from RAF Inveraray tomorrow mornin’.”
